  7. How to Write an Address

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure for me towelcome you all to this symposium. It seems safe to saythat what was originally planned as a nonrecurring event has now established itself to a tradition. The fact thatso many of you have wanted to return year after year, certainly proves thatthe earlier conferences have been successful and valuable.

The subject for this year's symposium "Food and Fiber" seems to meto be not only the most timely that we have ever chosen but also the most ambiguous. It is interesting to note thatthe whole question of fiber and its medical importance started in the depth of Africa and thus is the second nutritional problem of great importance which comes to us from the developing world. As far as I knowvery few conferences have been held on the subject and I think that this at leastis the first to be held in Europe. I certainly hope thatthe symposium shall be able to answer at least some of the very complex questions involved in this subject
